Set in the pretty Gloucestershire village of Marshfield, The Lord Nelson Inn is a warm retreat for those seeking tasty food and a place to enjoy a quiet drink. The pub features a cosy bar and a superb bed-and-breakfast service, as well as its main dining area, The Stables Restaurant. It was here that my partner and I enjoyed a truly wonderful meal courtesy of new head chef Alan Broadhurst. Alan brings a wealth of experience to the Lord Nelson's kitchen, having worked in some of London's best restaurants, as well as closer to home at the fabulous Bath Priory.

From Alan's expertly compiled menu, my appetiser of smoked chicken remoulade with celeriac, beetroot oil and pumpkin crisps was a light delight, while my partner's homemade terrine of Bath's three cheeses was also a hit. These dishes were followed by a grilled sirloin steak, complete with chips, vegetables and a creamy whisky and wild mushroom sauce, and a cherry tomato, olive and pesto tart. My steak was succulent and cooked just the way I like it and, having sampled just a tiny bit of my partner's tart, I totally understood her enthusiastic praise. After finishing our dessert of homemade chocolate cheesecake, accompanied by rum and raisin ice cream, we left The Lord Nelson Inn thoroughly impressed by its new chef and feeling deliciously satisfied and excited about our next visit.
