As a fan of an open fire and a good selection of traditional ales in my bar of choice, I can happily report that the Royal Oak has both, with the result being character aplenty. Awarded two AA rosettes, food is served in the brasserie and the non-smoking restaurant. There is also a small garden room which can seat up to ten guests. For my dinner, I first chose baked polenta with mushroom sauce and brie, which, half-melted, served as a fitting crown. For my main course, I went for the oven-roasted pheasant, and this succulent breast of fowl was so tantalisingly good - truly an eye-opening experience for which I give ultimate kudos to the chef. The selection of fine cheeses I sampled at the end was further enhanced by the smooth house Merlot I'd been sipping. Monday to Friday lunch there is an excellent value table d'hôte menu available (£15 for three courses). The Royal Oak provides the perfect setting for conferences, business lunches and wedding receptions. There are also a number of en-suite rooms available, which makes the inn a popular stopover for meetings at nearby Newbury racecourse. In summer months, meals can be taken in the beautiful walled garden. The Royal Oak's popularity and well-deserved reputation for gastronomic delight means that booking is essential if you plan to eat at the weekend.
