Apparently England's most common pub name is the Red Lion. But don't be fooled, the Red Lion in Upper Basildon is certainly a most uncommon pub/restaurant. It's a rare treat to find a place that maintains the traditional feel and friendliness of an old English pub, whilst at the same time providing excellent and varied food of the highest quality. Landlord Jeff Cronyn and head chef Tim Butler manage this difficult job with great charm.

Situated in the beautiful Berkshire countryside about 10 miles from Reading and 3 miles from Pangbourne, the area is a magnet for walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts (don't be surprised to see a horse tied up outside or exhausted dogs sleeping by the fire).

The food is fresh and cooked to order, and shows a wide range of influences from traditional English, to modern continental, to new world fusion. The meals are well balanced and beautifully presented, and the same extensive, frequently changed menu and daily specials can be enjoyed in the pub or the large smokefree restaurant. If you get the opportunity, try and book for one of the Thursday evening music nights, which attract some of the areas best bands (check for details).

So if you want to just stand at the bar, sit in the garden, eat wonderful bangers and mash in a traditional pub atmosphere, or enjoy Moroccan monkfish and clam stew in a tranquil restaurant, try the Red Lion. Jeff and his team promise you a very warm welcome.
