You'll find Loch Fyne a short walk from The Oracle Centre, on the River Kennet. The stunning setting is a refurbished 17thcentury brewery malt house, beautifully lit to create a relaxed but refined ambience.

With their beginnings as an oyster company in the Scottish Highlands in 1977, all the food served in the restaurant is from sustainable sources. The menu is mainly fish-based, but about a quarter of the dishes are vegetarian or meat, including their own Glen Fyne West Highland prime 8oz sirloin steak (£16.95).

Loch Fyne offers full service for both lunch and dinner, with a selected lunch menu for just £10 per person.

The house speciality is oysters but there is a wide range of alternative starters, and we ordered Bradan Orach smoked salmon (£6.95) and the more unusual herring fillets in four marinades (£4.95), which had wonderfully contrasting sharp and salty flavours.

There is a healthy number of main courses, including whole lobster (£24.95) and the highly recommended Loch Fyne mussels, either steamed in chilli and coriander, or served as tradional moules merinier (£14.95), and the equally good Bradan Rost salmon, char-grilled with a whiskey and wild mushroom sauce (£9.95). Accompanied by crisp seasonal vegetables (£1.95), polite, attentive and well-informed service and striking surroundings, our meal was truly outstanding.

There is a selection of home-made desserts, such as crème brûlée (£3.95), ice creams and a Scottish and Irish cheese board with oat cakes (£4.95).

Catering for families, young people and couples alike, Loch Fyne is the perfect place for that special meal.
