Location: 6 Prospect Street, Caversham, Reading, RG4 8JG Tel: 0845 241 2932 Open: Mon-Sun noon-3pm, 6pm-11pm Website: www.kyreniarestaurant.com Kyrenia Greek Restaurant is situated in the centre of Caversham, just outside of Reading, and is very much a neighbourhood restaurant. The family-run restaurant offers classic, home-style Greek cooking combined with the hospitality native to the founder's Cyprus homeland. With stylish, understated surroundings, Kyrenia is the kind of restaurant where you can spend hours over a meal, enjoying excellent food, wine and company. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with service laid-back but polite - Kyrenia has established a base of loyal regulars that add to its personal, welcoming feel. The menu captures authentic Greek cuisine at its best, and includes Cypriot dishes with Middle Eastern influences. Starters range from freshly made traditional dips, like hummus, tztatziki and taramosalata, through to dishes such as Iman Bayeldi (sautéed aubergines, red peppers and courgettes) and delicious home-made spanakopittes (spinach and feta cheese wrapped in filo pastry). Main courses include kleftiko (a quintessentially Greek dish of slow oven-baked lamb), stiphado (tender beef braised in red wine) and, of course, souvlaki. However, Kyrenia's signature dishes are found in its selection of mezze. As well as being the best in the area, it is exceptionally good value - choose from either traditional or seafood options. The dessert menu is also impressive, ranging from traditional baklava, Greek yoghurt with honey and almonds, sorbets or a simple, beautifully presented fruit plate. Kyrenia's carefully selected wine list offers a good range of Cypriot and Greek wines, together with other European varieties. A special lunchtime menu is available during the week and there is a good selection of vegetarian options. Kyrenia can cater for private functions, and reservations are recommended for all weekend bookings.
