Hidden away in the hamlet of Beech Hill is The Elm Tree - a gem of a pub/restaurant. This award-winning historic pub was rescued from developers in 2002 by Bob Walton. 'I just loved the pub as soon as I saw it. In the summer you can sit on the decking and enjoy the beautiful rolling hills that surround Beech Hill. In the winter you can snuggle up in front of the open fire in the old barn. There are loads of nooks and crannies that make delightful spaces for people to relax and enjoy their meal.'

Bob is a chef who is passionate about food. He buys from local farmers and uses as many organic ingredients as possible and is constantly searching for inspiration. His menu has pastas, salads, a good vegetarian selection, grills, oriental foods and good old-fashioned English dishes with the Elm Tree 'twist'.

We had the great pleasure to be invited by Bob to try the food especially for the Berkshire Food & Drink Guide. To start we tried grilled goat's cheese with pepper dew stuffing served with pesto toast (£5.95), and six New Zealand Mussels gratinated with piquant Provençal sauce £7.50.

Moving onto the main course, we sampled the divine rigatoni pasta with warm gravadlax sauce (salmon and dill) at £9.50, and the 10oz rib-eye steak with green pepper sauce £15.95. To finish, we indulged in the trio of chocolate steamed sponge with Cointreau custard (£5.95), followed by local and continental cheeses with preserves and biscuits (£7.50).

Everything was beautifully cooked, well presented and the service was excellent. A superb evening. We can highly recommend The Elm Tree in Beech Hill.
